Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is an ideal device for implementing dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networks.
It is based on a planar optical waveguide loop (PLC) technology and is a role-spread passive device. It consists of a phase controller, a diffraction grating, and input and output waveguides.Compared with other grating technologies, AWG has the advantages of flexible design, low insertion loss, good filtering characteristics, stable long-term reliability, easy coupling with optical fibers, and suitability for mass production. It is widely used in DWDM optical networks.
